June 15, 2015 – the first International Day of Yoga was globally observed.

International Day of Yoga is observed globally, to highlight the importance of yoga in the contemporary era, every year on June 21.

The announcement was made at the UN General Assembly on December 11, 2014 .June 21, the United Nations and international public yeagadinamayi suggested to the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Originating in India , yoga aims to transform body and mind by touching the physical, mental and spiritual levels.

When proposing 21 June as the date, Modi said that the date was the longest day of the year in the mass northern hemisphere (shortest in the southern hemisphere), having special significance in many parts of the world. From the perspective of yoga, the summer solstice marks the transition to Dakshinayana.

June 21 is internationally celebrated as World Music Day.World Music Day was founded by Jack Lang and Maurice Fleuret and was first held in Paris, France in 1982.
